`
`DETAILED ACTION
`
`Notice of Pre-AIA or AIA Status
`
`The present application, filed on or after March 16, 2013, is being examined under the first
`
`inventor to file provisions of the AIA.
`
`Information Disclosure Statement
`
`1.
`
`The information disclosure statements (IDS) submitted on 2/25/2019 and 3/21/2019 are in
`
`compliance with the provisions of 37 CFR 1.97. Accordingly, the information disclosure statements are
`
`being considered by the examiner.
`
`Response to Amendment
`
`2.
`
`The amendment filed on 12/20/2018 has been entered. Claims 1-4, 6, and 7 have been entered
`
`and considered.
`
`Claim Rejections - 35 USC § 103
`
`3.
`
`In the event the determination of the status of the application as subject to AIA 35 U.S.C. 102
`
`and 103 (or as subject to pre-AIA 35 U.S.C. 102 and 103) is incorrect, any correction of the statutory
`
`basis for the rejection will not be considered a new ground of rejection if the prior art relied upon, and
`
`the rationale supporting the rejection, would be the same under either status.
`
`4.
`
`The following is a quotation of 35 U.S.C. 103 which forms the basis for all obviousness rejections
`
`set forth in this Office action:
`
`A patent for a claimed invention may not be obtained, notwithstanding that the claimed invention is
`not identically disclosed as set forth in section 102, if the differences between the claimed invention
`and the prior art are such that the claimed invention as a whole would have been obvious before the
`effective filing date of the claimed invention to a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the
`
`
`
`Application/Control Number: 15/194,750
`Art Unit: 2626
`
`Page 3
`
`claimed invention pertains. Patentability shall not be negated by the manner in which the invention
`was made.
`
`5.
`
`This application currently names joint inventors. In considering patentability of the claims the
`
`examiner presumes that the subject matter of the various claims was commonly owned as of the
`
`effective filing date of the claimed invention(s) absent any evidence to the contrary. Applicant is advised
`
`of the obligation under 37 CFR 1.56 to point out the inventor and effective filing dates of each claim that
`
`was not commonly owned as of the effective filing date of the later invention in order for the examiner
`
`to consider the applicability of 35 U.S.C. 102(b)(2)(C) for any potential 35 U.S.C. 102(a)(2) prior art
`
`against the later invention.
`
`6.
`
`Claims 1-4, 6, and 7 are rejected under 35 U.S.C. 103 as being unpatentable over Claessens et al
`
`US 2005/0168199 in View of Yuichiro et al JP2015011868 and Yuji JP2015065775.

`
`Response to Arguments
`
`7.
`
`Applicant's arguments filed 12/20/2018 have been fully considered but they are not persuasive
`
`and the interview statements have been retracted.
`
`8.
`
`Applicant on pgs. 5 and 6 argues that Claussens, Yuichiro, and Yuji do not teach that the
`
`switching device is mounted on the substrate so as to be present between the first inductor and the
`
`second inductor along the arrangement direction. It is noted that Yuichiro in Figs. 1 and 2 teaches that
`
`the switching device {“3} is mounted on the substrate (the suhstrate 2%, as shown in Fig. 2) so as to be
`
`present between the first inductor (nrirnan; winding of 5) and the second inductor (secondary winding
`
`of 5} aiong an arrangement direction {etgn aiong the z axis of Fig. Ziai). Additionaiiy, it is noted that that
`
`Ciaussen is not cited as teaching that the first inductor and the second inductor are mounted on the
`
`substrate as argued on ogs. 5-«5.
`
`Applicant then argues that Yuichiro does not teach that the switch 7 is present between the
`
`primary winding the secondary winding of 5 in Fig. 2. However, Yuichiro was never cited as teaching the
`
`switch is between the primary and the secondary winding. It is Claussen that is cited as teaching the
`
`switch is between the first inductor and second inductor.
`
`9.
`
`Aooiicant argues that the cited art does not teach ”the pair affirst coii terrninais and the pair of
`
`second coii terminals are mounted on or through a top or bottom surface of the substrate adjacent a
`
`some edge of the substrate that is perpendicuiar to the top and bottom surface” on pg. 7. Examiner
`
`respectfuiiy disagrees. as Yuichiro in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 teaches a pair of second coii terminais (input
`
`terminai and output terminai of the secondary winding of 5 in Fig, 1} individuaiiy electricaiiy connected

`
`to opposite ends: of the second eoii of the second inductor {the intent and output ends of the secondary
`
`winding 0f 6, See Fig. 1). Furthermore, ‘r’uichiro teaches that the. pair of first eoii terminais and the pair
`
`of second coii termihais being mounted on or through a top or hettorn surface of the substrate 20
`
`(hotter haif edge at the substrate 2i) in Fig. 2} and adjacent a same edge of the substrate perpendieuiar
`
`to the top or bottom surface (the upper haif edge of 2% is aiong the y direction of Fig. 2(a), a direction
`
`nernehdicniar to the top or hottom surface, that is aieng the z direetion of Fig. 2(a)}. Furthermore,
`
`‘ruiehiro teaches that the terminals are mounted on a same edge of the substrate in a direction
`
`perpendicuiar to the arrangement direction (the upper haif edge G? 29 is atong the y direetioh of Fig.
`
`Zia}, a direction oeroendicuiar to the arrangement direction, 2 direction of Fig. Zia} E). Specificaiiy, the
`
`arrangement direction corresponds to the z direction of Fig. 2(a). The rejection of ciairn 1!- is reworded to
`
`incorporate this.
