`
`High tech is hitting the streets in fashion, and it's not geek chic.
`
`Instead of T-shirts, gadget haute couture includes jackets with built-in MP3 players, cell phones and remote controls.-And raincoats designed
`to handle Palm organizers. And jewelry that doubles as a camera, electronic organizer or music player.
`
`It's not some future vision — some of these products are available now, and more are on the way. 'It's. being called wearable electronics, or
`"e—wear." Or maybe "e-weird" considering that some ideas seemgto be coming from left field.
`
`Here's a look at how the techie generation is beginning to dress forsuccess:
`
`+Levi's and Philips promote their ICD-l-(Industrial Clothing Design Plus) line as combining "functionality with modern communication." The four-
`jacket line integrates an MP3 player, cell phone and remote control, with wiring concealed throughout the garment. If the phone rings while the
`MP3 player is on,
`it automatically lowers the volume.
`
`It's not cheap (3;-600-3; 900), and it's available so far only in Europe. Why? The phones used over there won't work over here-. It's not known if
`or when the line will cross the big pond.
`
`+The popularity of handheld organizers has spread to fashion. Palm Inc. has teamed up with Sanyo_Fashion House to create Palm-ready
`raincoats, with special pockets big enough to hold the gadgets. Again, don't look for them in the bargain bin. Prices range from $ .185 to $ 695.
`
`+With its Wrist Technology Watches, Casio has done one better on the wristwatch phone of the Dick Tracy comic strips. Different Casio
`models include MP3 players, digital cameras, Global Positioning System receivers, voice recorders and organizers.
`
`Andfor the future, IBM is developing digital jewelry, as part of its “pervasive computing" project that's‘based on the ‘idea that one day we will
`be connected wherever we go.
`-
`
`Among its prototypes are a necklace with a microphone, earrings with speakers to take your calls, and a watch and bracelet with screens to

`
`Do y'ou know what‘HMD means? It's short for head—mounted display, and it's'an» element of- wearable computers, an idea that's gaining
`prominence as technology" createssmaller and smaller gadgets.
`
`‘IBM is working on a prototype in which a small eyepiece on a headband is the monitor and the central processing unit that weighs less than a
`pound clips to a belt.
`
`.It's not necessarily just for kids, either. Companies such as Xybernaut are carrying the idea into _the workplace, with wearable PCs that keep
`people connected everywhere. Orang-Otang Computers has a future products section on its Web site that includes items such as the Cuff
`Cam, a camera that slides in and out of a shirt sleeve as needed.
