`
`amended. No new matter has been added.
`
`Claim Objections
`
`Claims 1-14 are objected to for informalities. It is submitted that the objections to the
`
`pending claims has been overcome.
`
`Claim Rejections Under 35 U.S.C. §103
`
`Claims 1, 5-7, 9 and 10 are rejected under 35 U.S.C. §103(a) as being unpatentable
`
`over Ishiyama, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2002/0113781,
`
`in view of Shibaet al, U.S. Patent
`
`Publication No. 2004/0258866, and Akimoto, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2002/0000970.
`
`Claims 2-4 and 11-14 are rejected under 35 U.S.C. §103(a) as being unpatentable over

`Serial No. 11/673,836
`Amendmentfiled June 8, 2011
`Responsive to Final Office Action dated March 8, 2011
`
`HPTA-5575
`
`Applicants request reconsideration of the rejections in view of the foregoing
`
`amendments and for the following reasons.
`
`Claims 1, 10 and 15 have been amended for purposesof clarification. For example,
`
`claim 1 has been amended to set forth that the first memory is directly connected to the
`
`display area through a switch. Further, claim 1 recites that first image data on at least one of
`
`the plural data lines is selectable from the first image data stored in the first memory through
`
`the switch. Claims 10 and 15 have also been amendedto set forth that the first memoryis
`
`directly connected to the display area through a switch. As such, it is submitted that the
`
`pending claimsare patentable over Ishiyama, Shiba, Akimoto and Kitagawa, whether
`
`considered individually or in combination with one another.
`
`By way of example only, a memory MEM1 is connected by switches SWato a
`
`display area 11. As shown in Fig. 8, for example, a control signal CNTa controls the
`
`switches SWasuch that data in MEM1 is transferred from MEM1 by the switches SWato the
`
`display area 11. Further, by switching control between the display area and the memory
`
`MEM1, data displayed on the display area can be loaded into the memory MEM 1.
`
`Accordingly, it is possible to provide dual-directional data transfer between the display area
`
`and MEM 1.
`
`The Examinerrelies upon the combination of Ishiyama, Shiba and Akimoto in
`
`rejection independent claims | and 10. Ishiyama discloses a display data RAM 24 whichis
`
`connected to a selector 64 whichis in turn connected to an output latch 66, and the output
`
`latch 66 is connected to a liquid crystal drive 68. See Fig. 3. In other words, Ishiyama
`
`10

`

`Serial No. 11/673,836

`
`HPTA-5575
`
`discloses that the display data RAM 24is separated from a display area 22 by the liquid
`
`crystal drive 68. Accordingly, Ishiyama fails to disclose or suggest that a first memoryis
`
`directly connected to a display area through a switch.
`
`Further, Akimotois relied upon by the Examinerfor disclosing an LCDdisplay driver
`
`system having a selector comprising at least one switch for the purpose of selectively routing
`
`image data to a display area. Akimoto discloses a frame memory SRAM 7 whichis
`
`connected by a low power-consumption DA converter 6 to a display unit 50. See Fig. 1.
`
`In
`
`particular, data from the frame memory7 is input to data decoder 61 and the data decoder 61
`
`outputs decoded data to the display unit 50. See paras. [0061]-[0062]. As such, data is only
`
`transferred in one direction, from the frame memory7 to the data decoder 61. However, as
`
`set forth in claim 1, a first memory is directly connectedto a display area through a switch.
`
`Additionally, the Examiner relies upon Shiba. However, Shiba is merely cited by the
`
`Examinerto disclose a thin film display device employing a first memory constituted on a
`
`substrate where the display area is provided byutilizing a thin film transistor. See p. 5 of the
`
`Office Action dated March 8, 2011. Meanwhile, Ishiyama discloses RAM 24 anddisplay
`
`area 22 are separated by a liquid crystal drive 68 and Akimoto discloses SRAM 7 and display
`
`unit 50 are separated by a DA converter 6. Accordingly, the foregoing deficiencies in
`
`Ishiyama and Akimoto are not cured by the Examiner’s reliance upon Shiba as applied to
`
`claims 1, 10 and 15.
`
`Applicants also respectfully assert that Kitagawa does not overcome the deficiencies
`
`in Ishiyama, Akimoto and Shiba, whether considered separately or in combination.

`
`Therefore, pending claims 1-7 and 9-18 are patentable overthe art of record and therefore the
`
`rejections under 35 U.S.C. §103(a) should be withdrawn.
`
`Conclusion
`
`In view of the foregoing, Applicant respectfully requests that a timely Notice of
